What is TMJ/TMD?

Dr. Hoa Nguyen - Ottawa dentist - What is TMJ/TMD?

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can be found slightly in front of the lower part of your ears where the temporal bone of the skull connects to the mandible (lower jaw). The joint is one of the more complex in our body and allows for the vertical opening and closing of the mouth as well as the lateral (side to side) movement of the mandible (lower jaw).

The complexity of the joint itself, along with the pressure that it is subjected to when biting or chewing, makes it very susceptible to dysfunction. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is fairly common and presents with a wide range of seemingly unrelated symptoms. Causes can range from something as instantaneous as opening the mouth too quickly or widely, to something more chronic as the clenching or grinding of your teeth. There are a variety of other less common causes of TMD which Dr. Hoa Nguyen and his team explore before arriving at a diagnosis.
